The American Flag: Contest Inspires Fifth Grade Essays.

In the British colonies of North America before the Revolution, each of the 13 colonies had its flag. On Jan. 2, 1776, the first flag of the United States was raised at Cambridge, Mass., by George Washington.

Jan Chancey, American History Essay Chair served as mistress of ceremonies. She introduced the student winners and Margie Ways, Regent presented each student with a metal, Certificate, bookmark, and flag pin from the Shenandoah Valley Chapter. Students followed the contest rules to compose an essay on the “The Voyage of the Mayflower.”.

The American flag flies high and proud just in that, but the courage it shows as it waves in the wind reminds us of the American people. Across the seas, American soldiers fought, not for their own lives, but for America. The freedom that now reigns in America did not come without a war.

To help our country’s most promising young citizens learn firsthand the principles of our free republic guided by the principles of democracy, the Auxiliary promotes many patriotic youth programs, most notably American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation, held regionally and nationally, and the Americanism Essay Contest which is conducted in local school.
